The Approach R50 is not a launch monitor you pull out at the range. It's the center of a golf simulator setup — a 10-inch touchscreen that handles everything a proper home golf experience requires: ball data, club data, course selection, simulator software, and a visual interface that's designed to run a bay, not a practice session. At $7,249.99, it's Garmin's answer to the question of what a serious golfer does with the room in their basement once they decide they're not storing the boat down there anymore.
The data is professional-grade: ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, carry distance, total distance, smash factor, and club path, among others. The 10-inch built-in touchscreen eliminates the need for a separate display or tablet. It runs Garmin Golf's simulator library directly, so you can play world-famous courses or set up a pure practice environment without additional software licensing on top of the hardware purchase.
What Don says: "When I first saw the R50 running, I thought about all the members at Muskoka who disappear for four months every winter. This is what they need in their basement — not to replace the game, but to stay in it. To come back in May with something left in their swing instead of starting from scratch. The R50 is a serious piece of equipment for people who are serious about not losing their game to a Canadian winter."
Who this is for: Golfers committed to year-round practice who have the space for a proper simulator bay. Anyone who's been renting simulator time at $50–$150 an hour and can do the math on a home setup. Corporate or hospitality use — a private golf simulator room is an amenity with real value. Golfers at the level where improvement requires more than range time and guessing.
When NOT to buy this: If you're exploring launch monitors and want to start with something portable and affordable, the Approach R10 at $699.99 is the correct first device. The R50 requires a bay setup — minimum 8-foot ceiling, impact screen, and projector or dedicated display. It's not the device you bring to the driving range. If you're not committed to building or already having a permanent space, the investment doesn't make sense.
Key specs: 10-inch built-in touchscreen | Full launch monitor data suite | Integrated golf simulator software | Built-in WiFi for course updates | Professional bay installation recommended | Available with Opened condition at reduced price
Setup support: Don provides a complimentary 30-minute orientation call with every R50 purchase — covering installation considerations, software setup, and getting the most out of the system in year one. This is the device where that call matters most.
