Ford Transit Modular Aluminum Roof Rack

Build a stronger and more versatile roof setup with the Tec Vanlife Ford Transit Modular Roof Rack, engineered specifically for Ford Transit camper vans and commercial van conversions.

Available for Ford Transit 130, 148 and 148 EXT wheelbases, with configurations for Mid Roof and High Roof Transit vans, this lightweight aluminum roof rack provides a modular platform for solar panels, cargo, rooftop accessories and adventure equipment.

Designed around the Ford Transit factory roof mounting locations, the rack provides a secure installation without requiring unnecessary drilling into the van roof. Its modular crossbar system also allows the roof layout to be configured around solar panels, roof fans, skylights and other camper van equipment.

Ford Transit 148 High Roof Roof Rack

The Ford Transit 148 High Roof roof rack configuration is designed for one of the most popular Transit camper van platforms. The modular crossbar layout allows builders to position components around solar panels, ventilation fans, skylights and other rooftop accessories while maintaining usable cargo space.

Ford Transit 148 EXT High Roof Roof Rack

For longer camper van builds, the Ford Transit 148 EXT roof rack provides additional rooftop capacity for solar arrays, storage and adventure equipment while maintaining the same modular aluminum construction.

The extended configuration is ideal for Transit 148 EXT camper vans that need to maximize available roof space for off-grid electrical systems and rooftop accessories.

Ford Transit 130 & Mid Roof Roof Rack Options

The modular system is also available for Ford Transit 130 and Mid Roof vans, providing the same lightweight construction and flexible accessory mounting in configurations designed for shorter Transit platforms.

Built for Ford Transit Camper Van Conversions

A camper van roof needs to accommodate more than cargo. The Tec Vanlife Ford Transit camper van roof rack is designed around the equipment commonly installed on modern Transit conversions.

The modular crossbar layout can be configured around:

Planning these components together allows you to maximize usable roof space while maintaining access to ventilation and rooftop equipment.

For complete camper van roof layouts, the Transit rack can be combined with compatible Tec Vanlife roof accessories and ProBreeze ventilation products.

TEC Features:

  • Modular Design: Crossbars can be relocated to accommodate solar panels, cargo boxes, roof fans, A/C units, or any other rooftop gear.
  • Reinforced Aluminum Side Rails: Extruded aluminum with double-thick corners ensures maximum strength and rigidity for mounting awnings and supporting heavy loads.
  • Improved Airflow: Purposefully designed gap between the fairing and van body reduces turbulence and enhances airflow under solar panels, improving cooling and aerodynamic efficiency.
  • Custom Decking System: Compatible with our modular decking system, allowing walk-on panels with L-Track or conventional bolt configurations.

TEC Specs:

Lengths Available:

  • Transit 130: 56 lbs (25.4kg)
  • Transit 148: 72 lbs (32.6kg)
  • Rail Profile Height: 5" (128mm)
  • Outside Width: 53.34" (1355mm)
  • Crossbar Length: 52.95" (1345mm)

Internal Width for Solar Panels:

  • Transit 130: 51.77" (1315mm)
  • Transit 148: 62.40 in (1585 mm)

Our roof rack stands out for its superior strength, lightness, and versatility:

  • Unmatched Durability: Crafted from high-pressure molded aluminum extrusions, this rack system delivers exceptional load-bearing capacity and maintains structural integrity under challenging conditions. Unlike conventional bent aluminum racks, our single-piece aluminum profiles eliminate weak points, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  • Enhanced Versatility: Crossbars can be repositioned to work around roof accessories, providing maximum customization for your van setup.
  • Aerodynamic Efficiency: The gap between the fairing and van body improves airflow, reducing drag and noise while driving, and enhances cooling under solar panels when parked.
  • Lightweight Design: Extruded aluminum sidewalls reduce weight while maintaining strength, optimizing fuel efficiency and handling.

1. Which Ford Transit models does this roof rack fit?

The Tec Vanlife Modular Roof Rack is available for the Ford Transit 130 High Roof, 148 Mid Roof, 148 High Roof and 148 EXT High Roof. Select the correct wheelbase and roof height when ordering.

2. Does the roof rack fit Ford Transit low-roof vans?

No. The current configurations are designed for Transit Mid Roof and High Roof vans. They are not intended for Low Roof models.

3. How does the roof rack attach to the Ford Transit?

The roof rack attaches to the Transit’s factory roof-mounting locations using vehicle-specific brackets. The correct mounting arrangement depends on the selected wheelbase and roof height.

Ford Transit replacement mounting brackets are also available separately.

4. Does installation require drilling?

The rack uses the Ford Transit’s existing factory roof-mounting locations, so drilling through the van roof is not normally required. Some accessories may require holes in the rack’s aluminum components, depending on their mounting configuration.

5. Can solar panels be mounted to the rack?

Yes. The adjustable crossbars support a variety of solar-panel layouts. Tec Vanlife’s solar-panel mounting brackets are designed for compatible 1.5-inch roof-rack crossbars.

Confirm the panel dimensions, wiring routes and clearances before finalizing the layout.

6. Can the crossbars be repositioned?

Yes. The modular crossbars can be repositioned to accommodate solar panels, cargo boxes, roof fans, skylights, rooftop air conditioners and other equipment.

7. Is the rack compatible with a roof fan, skylight or rooftop air conditioner?

Yes. The modular design allows the crossbars to be positioned around compatible rooftop equipment, including the ProBreeze roof fan and ProBreeze SkyView 700 skylight.

Confirm the required roof opening, airflow, service access and equipment clearances before completing the rack layout.

8. Can a Fiamma or Thule awning be attached?

Compatible Fiamma and Thule awnings can be mounted to the reinforced aluminum side rails using the appropriate brackets and hardware.

Compatible options include the Fiamma F45S awning and Thule HideAway awning. Confirm the awning length and bracket configuration before ordering.

9. Can a cargo box be installed?

Yes. Compatible cargo boxes can be secured to the adjustable crossbars, provided their mounting hardware fits the rack and the complete installation remains within Ford’s roof-load limits.

One available option is the Thule Motion XXL cargo box.

10. Can you walk on the roof rack?

The rack can be fitted with Tec Vanlife’s modular decking system to create designated walk-on areas.

Do not walk directly on unsupported crossbars, solar panels or other roof accessories. Always remain within Ford’s applicable roof-load limits.

11. What does the Ford Transit roof rack weigh?

The approximate rack weights are:

  • Transit 130: 25.4 kg or 56 lb
  • Transit 148: 32.6 kg or 72 lb

Decking, awnings, solar panels and other accessories increase the total installed weight. Confirm the final specification for the 148 EXT configuration before ordering.

12. What is the maximum load capacity?

The permitted load depends on Ford’s roof-load rating, the selected rack configuration and whether the vehicle is moving or stationary. Never exceed Ford’s specified dynamic or stationary roof-load limit.

The weight of the rack, decking and every installed accessory must be included when calculating the total roof load.

13. What is included with the Ford Transit roof rack?

The rack includes aluminum side rails, modular crossbars, a front wind fairing, vehicle-specific mounting components and the required rack-assembly hardware.

Decking, awning brackets, solar brackets, cargo boxes and other accessories are not included unless specifically stated in the selected package.

14. What accessories can be mounted to the rack?

Compatible accessories include:

Always verify dimensions, mounting requirements and roof-load limits before installation.

15. Can Tec Vanlife install the roof rack?

Yes. Professional installation is available through Tec Vanlife in Delta, British Columbia. Contact the team to confirm vehicle compatibility, installation pricing and appointment availability.

16. How frequently should the hardware be inspected?

Inspect and retighten all hardware after the first 160 km or 100 miles. After that, inspect the rack every 1,000 km or 600 miles, or monthly—whichever occurs first.

Check the rack again after rough-road travel or if movement, vibration or unusual noise develops.
